Instructions For In-Office Anesthesia


To prepare for General Anesthesia or I.V. Sedation:

1. Do not eat any food or drink any liquids for eight (8) hours before your appointment.

… NO WATER, NO JUICE, NO COFFEE, ETC.
Ask the doctor for instructions regarding your usual prescription medications.

REASON: Your stomach should be empty of food and liquids to minimize the possibility of vomiting (which can be an added risk during anesthesia).

2. A responsible adult MUST accompany you and MUST be present in the office while you are in surgery. They MUST be available to sit with you in recovery, escort you by arm, and accompany you home. Your driver MAY NOT drop you off and return at a later time. After your surgery you should not be left alone for the first 24 hours. A responsible person should be at home with you.

3. All fingernails need to be FREE of any type of nail polish (clear or colored). If acrylic nails are worn, all nails on each hand need to be FREE of acrylic.

4. Contacts must be removed before surgery. If possible wear glasses that day.

5. You will be questioned regarding your medical history and general health. Your blood pressure, pulse, electrocardiogram, may be taken. Please bring a list of medications you are taking.

6. Loose clothing should be worn, and both sleeves should be easily drawn past the elbow. PLEASE WEAR SENSIBLE WALKING SHOES. (NO FLIP –FLOPS, SLIP ON SANDALS, HIGH HEELS ETC.)

7. ALL BODY JEWELRY MUST BE REMOVED. e.g., Tongue rings, nose rings, eye brow rings, neck rings, etc.

8.Tie hair back away from face.

9. NO MAKE-UP.

10. Any patient undergoing General Anesthesia or I.V. Sedation must follow the above instructions and agree to the following:

  • DO NOT drive a vehicle or operate any machinery that day.
  • DO NOT undertake any responsible business matters that day.
  • DO NOT drink any alcohol that day.
  • DO NOT take any medications without approval.

11. If you have a cold or are getting a cold, please call the office as soon as possible.
Surgery may be postponed.

12. Please utilize the restroom after checking in with the front desk on the day of your surgery.
